At school, everyone who first met Angelo would say he was a very electric boy. Among all the boys who played football at the little school in Figueirense, young Angelo stood out – and he was always with a smile on his face.

Despite the focus being on taking their son to a football school, Idene and Elismar didn’t forget their idea of ensuring their child studied and passed his exams. Angelo wasn’t one to bury himself in books all the time at school.

In fact, he never troubled his parents with academic shortcomings. Just as he was diligent in football, Gabriel approached his studies with dedication and intelligence.

The youngster started taking the beautiful game seriously in 2012. Back then, when he was aged eight, Angelo played on the pitches of Celacap, whose address is SIA B – Guará, Brasília.

In the first training session, everyone noticed that Angelo had a lot of skill and he was above the average speed.

These were the words of Angelo’s coach, Professor Carlos Roberto, a 50-year-old who bears the nickname Betinho. The professor and his friend, Flávio Bastos, taught an 8-year-old Angelo the fundamentals of the game.

He introduced the youngster to a series of tests, and he noticed that the boy developed faster than normal. At Meninos da Vila DF school, Betinho described little Angelo as a skilled, fast player with lots of technical qualities and offensiveness.

The Special Boy:

While at the Menino da Vila” youth development team, an eight-year-old Angelo was allowed to play with 11 year old children simply because he was special. Those who knew him would agree that he was already an adult with the ball at his feet.

Betinho, to this day, remembers how his student achieved a meteoric rise in his team. Angelo did the unthinkable at the first championship cup, also known as the traditional Copa Dente de Leite. As lucky as he was, the day of the competition’s final happened to be the day of his birthday.

Angelo Gabriel turned nine on that day, and his parents organized a small party for him, family and friends. Before enjoying that birthday party, he felt the need to play the first or second half of the competition’s final.

Did you know?… it took a talented Angelo Gabriel just minutes to score the winning goal. In fact, he single-handedly helped his team win the tournament against Planaltina (a match that ended 3-2 in favour of his team).

Luckily for him, his team celebrated their Championship on the day of his ninth birthday, the 21st day of December 2013.

What happened next was a wave of Brazilian clubs wanting to have the youngster in their academy. Before the arrival of Santos, Angelo had three major suitors: Palmeiras, Atletico-MG and Desportivo Brasil (in the front row).

Angelo Gabriel Biography – Football Story:

For the youngster, all he wanted was to become a professional with the club of his dreams. Little Angelo was no different to most kids who aspired to play for Santos – the club that produced Greats likes of Neymar, Robinho and Pele.

Now, how did Angelo attract Santos FC? First, a Scout from the club observed his deadly left foot. More importantly, Angelo’s outstanding performance in the championship (the traditional Copa Dente de Leite).

Indeed, the potential of Angelo to become a great football player was high, and that made Santos invite him for trials.

When Angelo Gabriel arrived at Santos, he was first introduced to Alex Souza, the coach of the club’s under-11 team, who welcomed him. Alex Souza has been working with Santos since 1997, having served in various capacities, including a stint as a general services assistant.

Santos entrusted Alex Souza with their “hunt for promises” campaign. Back then, his primary mission was to scout young football talents for their under-11 team.

Angelo Gabriel was among the youngsters who passed the trials. At the age of 9, Angelo captured Coach Alex Souza’s attention by displaying qualities which the club highly valued, such as audacity, intelligence, and skill.

Normally, boys who come for trials at Santos spend more than a week before the club decides whether to accept them into their academy.

Surprisingly, Angelo Gabriel’s trial only lasted for one day. The reason is that Santos reported that boys with his kind of gift did not exist, and that was why Angelo was quickly approved.

The Difficult Decision:

Upon joining Santos, Angelo had to make an adult decision even though he was just nine years old. He left home and also left the bed made by his mother almost on a daily basis to follow his dreams.

Truth be told, it is tough for any boy (at age nine) who leaves home, leaves his family behind and travels 921 kilometres (distance from Brasília to Santos) to pursue his dreams.

Angelo decided to face it, including the idea of fearing he may, at some point, face unexpected problems where there would be no family member to help him.

Imagine a boy, just nine years old, who had previously broken his mother’s household and decorative items, being called to join a prestigious club like Santos.

For Angelo and his family, this offer was irresistibly significant, and it represented the direction he desired for his life. This opportunity profoundly transformed the athlete’s life and that of his family.

Truth be told, allowing their precious son to leave home was a challenge for Idene and her husband. However, recollecting the years they invested in his upbringing, education, and instilling good manners only intensified their desire to let him go. And they vowed to support Angelo even more.

Despite pledging her overwhelming support, that moment was tough for Idene. As the mother of Angelo Gabriel, she harboured fears ranging from potential kidnappings to her son having injuries and other misfortunes.

Indeed, it was a fearful feeling knowing that football took her young son, then only nine, away from the protective embrace of his family.

Living with a Friend:

In his first year with Santos, Angelo decided to live with his childhood friend, Hyan Carvalho, who also left Brasília to take tests at Santos and also passed. Hyan’s parents also agreed to give up everything to ensure their son’s dreams stay alive.

Angelo’s parents, Idene and Elismar, would most times cheer their son from a distance. They, including the dad and mum of his roommate (Hyan Carvalho), agreed to rent an apartment for the sons. By doing that, the two families shared the rental cost between themselves.

Despite having a roommate, it wasn’t easy to feel at home in Santos (when young Angelo and Hyan Carvalho lived together). The positive thing was that both friends shared the same ambition for football and had a lot to discuss about their dreams.

At that time, the boys had moved on from their school days and were poised to seize the most significant opportunity of their lives.

Angelo Gabriel Bio – Road to Fame Story:

Idene and Elismar bought a phone for their son. They would go on to call Angelo in the mornings, afternoon and night.

As they made calls, they also packed their bags every weekend as the proud parents journeyed to Santos. In the words of Idene, Angelo Gabriel’s Mother,

We did our hearts out and sometimes we got into a lot of debt. There were several back-and-forths in the trips. Sometimes we’ll travel by plane, and sometimes by car.

It might interest you to know that where Angelo Gabriel’s Family lived (Samambaia, in the Federal District) and Santos are separated by around 1,089km of road network. Google Maps revealed that it is 14 hours and 30 minutes of driving by road.

Mostly on Friday night, Idene and Elismar will hit the road in a car heading to Santos. Their primary aim was to watch their baby boy, Ângelo, play on the weekends. All in the name of making the boy smile and not be confrontational throughout that day.

When Idene and her husband arrive, they will first see the smile on their son’s face, which is worth everything. Angelo would wait for them in front of a building, seeing his parents looking so tired and sleepy. The 14-hour journey was a lot of lost sleep – recalled Gabriel’s mother.

Early Years with Santos:

For coach Alex Souza, one of his best memories of Angelo Gabriel was his performance in local competitions. One such was the semi-final of the Campeonato Paulista under-11 against São Paulo.

The outcome of the game wasn’t the only one where Angelo was praised for his performance. There were other happenings in that match!

One of the game’s highlights showed the fact that Angelo did not want to take insults directed at him or his team.

The Role of his Grandmother – Irailda Dias:

She is Angelo Gabriel’s maternal grandmother. It was hard to see her daughter (Idene) feeling worried about the wellbeing of her grandson. Because of that, Irailda had to act, in her best possible way.

Angelo Gabriel’s grandmum made a huge sacrifice by leaving Samambaia, where the family stayed, to Santos so she would be close to her grandson.

As he grew into his mid-teenage years, his style evolved, as it was compared to two other Santos Legends. People said that Angelo played like Jonas Eduardo Américo, nicknamed Edu, a former Brazilian winger.

Again, they said his style was compared to Neymar, in the area of his dribbling at speed and the outstanding ability to change direction quickly.

On October 23rd, 2020, the Athlete, much to the delight of his family, inked a professional pre-contract agreement with Santos, realizing a childhood aspiration.

Angelo Gabriel’s parents, along with extended family members—including his grandmother, seen on the far left—gathered to commemorate this significant career achievement.

At 15, Ângelo was given the licence to play with Santos’ senior footballers. To the joy of his family, he made his debut at Maracanã against Fluminense.
