Instead of remaining a jack of all trades, the youngster decided to do the needful regarding his playing position.

For Vincent, playing as a striker rather than a goalkeeper would make his qualities speak more. He also felt it would catch the eyes of coaches and recruiters.
In his neighbourhood where he played soccer, local scouts often come to shop for the best kids, usually strikers.
The best moment of Vincent Aboubakar’s early career came when he was 12 years old.
At that time, he and his cousins were among the kids called up to a soccer competition known as Top Cup. This is a competition organized for thousands of kids across Cameroon regions.
Vincent took part in the Top Cup tournament, which gave him the biggest opportunity of his life. In the end, the youngster and his cousin became star performers.

Getting recognized by Local Scouts:
After winning the Top Cup, a young Vincent Aboubakar began to have that feeling of making something out of soccer.
What followed next was a call to have trials for Brasseries Academy. During trials, Vincent impressed the local coaches, and he got accepted there.
While at Brasseries Academy, which has satellites across the country, his coaches saw the early signs that the boy would become great in the sport.
Because Vincent was that good, there were clear signs of him attracting even more, bigger soccer academies in Cameroon.
The Journey to Coton Sport:
This is by far the biggest club in North Cameroon. Upon spotting the kid, Christophe Ousmanou, the head of the Coton Sports youth sector, was very surprised that no other club had taken an interest in the lanky yet technically gifted Abubakar.
Quickly, he sprang into action. According to Christophe,
I called my Boss, Coton Sport’s president, Mr Maina Gilbert. Then, I told him that I had seen a very talented young Striker. A boy who had the potential of becoming a very good player, even the best in the country in years to come.
Thankfully, President Maina accepted, and we brought in Vincent alongside another footballer, Edgar Salli. Jacques Zoua was already at Coton Sports Academy. The three footballers later became part of Cameroon’s 2017 AFCON-winning squad.
In the year 2006, Aboubakar joined Coton Sport, where he continued to show his worth.
Christophe Ousmanou (head of the academy), who later became Cameroon’s U-20 team manager, was his biggest admirer. He said this when he saw Vincent play for the first time.
When I first saw Vincent Aboubakar play, I was very surprised by his ease on the ball.
Especially his ability to take on three or four players with wonderful dribbles.
The Journey to Fame:
Bankrolled by Cameroon’s cotton development company, Coton Sport (which gave him the platform to succeed in football) had immense wealth.
Did you know?… this club has a hand in supervising around 250,000 small farmers and has about 2,000 permanent employees.
Vincent Aboubakar rose through the youth ranks of Sport’s youth setup before making his way to the first team. The striker quickly adapted to the demands of professional football by becoming the top scorer in the nationality championship – The Elite One.
Winning the Elite One trophy was a true measure of his talent. Aboubakar’s performances concluded with goals and that pushed international recruiters to get hold of him as soon as possible. At this time, Vincent Aboubakar’s parents were now convinced of the path he has chosen.
At this stage, with Coton Sport, everyone knew the budding goal-scoring sensation was a volcanic mountain waiting to erupt.
Another of Aboubakar’s big breakthroughs came when he helped the Cotton Farmers (Coton Sport) win their 10th league title in the year 2010.
The Miraculous May 2010:
That 2009/2010 season, when Vincent helped his team to the supreme title, the local Press and Cameroon national football leaders began seeing him as a worthy successor to Samuel Eto‘o. At that time, national goal scorers were a rare species in the whole of Cameroon.
To look for what they wanted, the country had to go abroad to seek the likes of Karl Toko Ekambi and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (a German-born Cameroonian).
That same 2010, precisely in May, an 18-year-old Vincent Aboubakar got called up to the Old Lion’s 23 man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Vincent and his entire family will never forget the month of May 2010. Just two weeks after getting a national team call, The Cameroonian Baller (on the 26th of May) signed with Valenciennes in France. Not forgetting, Abubakar showed flashes of brilliance in the 2010 World Cup.
How Vincent Aboubakar got to Europe:
Did you know?… Valenciennes, the French club that signed Aboubakar, didn’t even see him play live.
They were not unaware (at the time) of the potential of the 18-year-old who they snatched from the big noses and beards of Monaco and Belgium club, Anderlecht.
Paul Le Guen, the coach of Cameroon, was the person who informed the French club about Aboubakar.
Valenciennes then sent their head of recruitment (Henri Zambelli) to quickly contact Vincent’s club, Coton Sport. Such convincing to get the boy became very difficult.
Did you know?… Henry Zambelli had to convince three groups of people. First is the President of the club (Coton Sport).
Second are members of Vincent Aboubakar’s family. Then, finally, is the major of Vincent Aboubakar’s village, including the whole village heads.
After a three-day negotiation, Valenciennes made a transfer of 250,000 euros to secure the services of Aboubakar.
The experience of seeing their very own leave for Europe for the first time was a truly emotional moment for all members of Vincent Aboubakar’s family.
Early Life in France:
Vincent Aboubakar landed in France for the first time – without his family or partner. A very optimistic Cameroonian never knew that tough times awaited him on his Europe journey.
In France, Vincent Aboubakar discovers winter cold, snow, and a totally different culture.
In Vincent Aboubakar’s house – located 200 meters from Valenciennes Nungesser stadium, he felt bored.
Suffering from missing his family, the poor Lad passes the time by drawing portraits of players like Mario Balotelli – as revealed by a Valenciennes employee.
Difficult Start to Life in Valenciennes:
Aboubakar Vincent went from the heat of Garoua to experiencing challenges in a foreign land.
At first, the workaholic began experiencing small alarm clock breakdowns and punctuality problems. Aboubakar failed to arrive early for training and he got punished.
Vincent didn’t have a car, so he came to training on foot or with friends. To make him arrive early, one of Valenciennes’ staff would go pick Aboubakar up at his house as early as 7:30 am for a training session scheduled for 10 am. Thanks to that, he never got late again.
Poor Aboubakar waited for a long time before he could find the back of the net with his new club. His first European goal came against the olden-days PSG in December 2010.
He had a poor first season after making 20 appearances, scoring only four, and assisting one goal.
In Vincent Aboubakar’s own words, “those were my toughest times”.
After scoring nine goals in as many as 72 appearances, the Northern French club exhausted their patience with Aboubakar. The club, out of frustration, decided to sell the striker to FC Lorient.
Vincent Aboubakar Biography – Rise to Fame Story:
Not being wanted by Valenciennes made him have a deep, sober reflection on his life. Severally, Vincent told himself that he was going to fight to make it.
Quickly, he became the type of player who would train all day individually, and his coaches had to force him to slow down.
Undergoing several hardcore training changed Aboubakar’s physical freshness. Thanks to that, his career got revived at Lorient. Did you know?… Vincent’s 16 goals saw him finish the season as the second-highest goal scorer in France.
The Cameroonian excelled in a Lorient team that had the likes of Raphaël Guerreiro as one of their best youngsters.

Similar to FC Porto, Aboubakar won trophies with Beşiktaş (the Süper Lig and Turkish Cup). Although memorable moments with his best friend (Anderson Talisca) will linger for a long time. However, that feeling of winning the prestigious Süper Lig will stay with him forever.
The Saudi move:
After conquering French, Portuguese, and Turkish club football, Aboubakar signed what many fans would call a surprise transfer. Similar to the decision of Andre Ayew (in 2021), Aboubakar made his mind up to play his football, not in Europe, but in the Middle East.
On 8 June 2021, Aboubakar signed with the Saudi club, Al Nassr, where he earned a whooping €6 million per year.
Shocking to football fans, the club also signed Anderson Talisca, who was Aboubakar’s Beşiktaş Strike partner. Even in Saudi, Aboubakar’s goals and skills humbled opponents.
Life with the Indomitable Lions:
Vincent Aboubakar’s adventures with Cameroon senior Football began when he was only eighteen. As earlier stated, the country was desperately in need of a local talent who would support Samuel Eto’o. He became the chosen one alongside German-born Eric Choupo-Moting.
From becoming one of the youngest players in the history of the FIFA World Cup, Aboubakar gradually imposed himself on the national team after Samuel Eto’o Fils’ retirement.
So far, his greatest moment with the Indomitable Lions was helping them win the 2017 AFCON finals.
For many fans who didn’t know, it was Vincent Aboubakar who scored the goal that won the AFCON 2017 final against Egypt. The Indomitable Lion scored a goal – which made Egypt’s Mohamed Elneny and Mo Salah speechless.
Vincent’s status in his country indeed changed after that 2017 AFCON goal. Since then, the Forward has dominated African football.
