Danny Welbeck Childhood Story – Early Life and Family Background:

For those just getting to know him, Danny Welbeck is often called “Welbz.” His full name is Daniel Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck. He was born on November 26th, year 1990, in Longsight, Manchester, United Kingdom.

Danny’s parents, Elizabeth Tumtuo Welbeck and Victor Chris Welbeck, both have roots in Ghana. Although born in Manchester, Danny’s heritage remains a significant part of his identity.

He spent his entire life in Manchester, where he was first noticed by Manchester United scouts at the age of six. By the time he was eight, he had already impressed his local team, Fletcher Moss, and soon after, he was recruited into the Manchester United youth academy.

During his time in the academy, Danny had two key mentors. One of them was none other than the legendary Ruud van Nistelrooy, who helped shape his early career.

Early Career Years:

The Baller was mentored by none other than Roy Keane, the joint-most successful Irish footballer of all time.

On January 25, 2010, Danny Welbeck became the first signing of Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex Ferguson, when Darren took over as manager of Preston North End during the 2009–10 season. It was at Preston that Welbeck first realized he was injury-prone, starting to notice swelling in his knee that required surgery. His knee troubles persisted during his loan move to Sunderland.

Concerned about his health, Manchester United brought Welbeck back to the club to undergo surgeries at their expense.

On September 2, 2014, just before the transfer deadline, Danny Welbeck signed with Arsenal on a “long-term deal” for a whooping £16 million.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal explained the decision to sell him to a rival by saying, “Welbeck doesn’t have the record of players like Robin van Persie or Wayne Rooney. We let him go to make room for Falcao and to give younger players a chance. That’s the policy.” And, as they say, the rest is history.

Love Life:

Danny Welbeck keeps his relationship life very private and under wraps. However, it’s rumoured that he dated a Nigerian woman named Opeoluwa, who currently lives in Canada. The two reportedly met while Danny was on vacation there.

In true banter style, Danny Welbeck responded with his own photo, which led Opeoluwa to delete her original post.

Ghanian Call-Up:

Welbeck’s memorable career was highlighted in 2011 when he teamed up with Black Stars trio Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and John Mensah at Sunderland on loan.

After several attempts by the three players to convince Danny to join the four-time African Champions, he refused to give in, just like Mario Balotelli, who was also convinced several times by Muntari to naturalize for Ghana during their stay at Inter Milan.

However, the interesting fact about Welbeck was unveiled on 29 March 2011 when he was called up to the England Senior National team for their friendly fixture against his own country, Ghana.

Danny replaced another late bloomer, Ashley Young, in the match’s 81st minute, which ended in a 1–1 draw with Ghana at Wembley Stadium.

Asamoah Gyan equalized for Ghana after Andy Carroll scored earlier. The boos from Ghanaian fans got to Danny as he missed several opportunities to put England in the lead.

After the game, Welbeck said in an interview that…

“It was a bittersweet moment,” he said. “I have a lot of love for both countries, but I can’t play for both. I understand why some people might be upset, but I can’t please everyone.

I’ve played for England at every youth level, so moving up to the senior team felt like a natural step. I’m really pleased with how far I’ve come.”

What we would remember him for after retirement:

  • For his height and running style. Welbeck has been compared to former Arsenal strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Nwankwo Kanu on the basis of height. He has styled his game on another former Arsenal forward, his boyhood hero Thierry Henry.
  • For his work rate, Danny has been described as strong, quick, and very good in the air.
  • For his injuries: He is a master of Groin, Kneel swellings and hamstring injuries.
