They were all afraid of not getting to the tournament on time. It took some time before the bus driver could find a mechanic who fixed the car, says Adílio Pinheiro, one of the coaches.

Finally, the bus arrived at the opening ceremony of the eight-day tournament. Vitinha’s team first faced Everton from England. They had a solid team to win the tournament. Diogo Costa (Vitinha’s teammate) was the star performer.

What followed next was a successful tournament. Vitinha’s Pinheirinhos de Ringe team was only eliminated in the semi-final by the French side Saint-Étienne.

Despite their elimination, their overall result in the competition was excellent. The tournament made the youngster popular in the eyes of scouts.

Vitinha Biography – Untold Football Story:

Upon returning from Aves, he noticed he had become a celebrity kid thanks to his excellent performance. In fact, the scouting team of Benfica de Braga Training Centre were after him.

This football academy operates as a branch of Benfica (not the actual Benfica). The scouts, who followed Vitinha for months, invited him for trials. Vitinha, who was tested at Casa do Benfica de Lanhoso village, passed with flying colours.

Nuno Costa was Vitinha’s first coach at the Benfica branch that accepted him. As he watched him play soccer for the first time, he found that Vitinha had a slightly delayed physical maturation.

Although Vitinha was smaller and thinner than many others, that didn’t make him inferior on the pitch. As the photo below shows, the Legendary Rui Costa headed this group of boys.

As for the way he plays the football game, it seemed little Vitinha had been born smart. He was observed to possess an anticipatory speed, similar to Andreas Iniesta’s style.

Vitinha’s team competed at AF Braga and won every trophy there. They had the best players in the area, and this set of boys never got tired of collecting trophies.

From the age of 8 to 11, Vitinha’s physical issues still existed. Because he had a delayed physical maturation, Benfica Academy delayed his integration into the next stage of their formation.
