According to his coach Caprez in the club, “Gregor was a very nice kid and always followed the rules,”. Gregor Kobel’s dad always wanted him to be a goalkeeper, but Gregor didn’t like the idea at first. Back then, people often made the weaker players stand in goal, and the future star was not weak at all!
However, obeying his father’s orders, the newbie keeper just went on practising his techniques. Gregor Kobel’s first goalkeeping coach, Fred Zbinden, remembers how hardworking Gregor was even as a young boy. All the training sessions were cancelled one winter because it was freezing outside—except for the goalkeepers. They trained in the snow, and everyone was cold and wet.
Zbinden finally said, “That’s enough for today. Let’s go take a warm shower!” But Gregor, shivering like everyone else, replied, “Do we have to stop? Training isn’t over yet!” Gregor just wanted to keep going, even though it was so cold.
When other kids were relaxing by the pool, Gregor was out training in the heat. One time, he broke his arm, but that didn’t stop him. The next day, he showed up to the football field, ready to practice—even with his arm in a cast!

Zbinden laughs, saying Gregor had long hair back then, maybe to hide all the scratches and bruises from his endless training. That’s just how determined and hardworking Gregor was, and it’s why he became such a fantastic goalkeeper today.
Gregor Kobel Biography – Road to Fame:
After moving up the ranks of the Grasshoppers team, Kobel became a part of the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the 16/17 season. In the 2019–20 season, Gregor joined VfB Stuttgart on loan to help their team. He played so well that on the 28th of July 2020, Stuttgart decided to keep him and signed him with a contract until June 2024.
On the 31st of May 2021, Gregor made a big move to Borussia Dortmund. He signed a five-year deal to play for the club starting in the 2021–22 season. Dortmund paid 15 million euros to Stuttgart to bring him to their team. And became part of the club when Jadon Sancho was leaving to Manchester United.
Later, on the 5th of October, 2023, Gregor extended his stay at Dortmund by signing a new contract until June 2028. The Agile Stopper played so well that he was named one of the best players in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for 22/23 and 23/24. He was also one of the best goalkeepers in the 23/24 UEFA Champions League, earning a spot in the Team of the Season for that tournament!
