Growing-Up Years:

Pedro Neves cherished life with his devoted wife and two kids, including Joao. Throughout his early years, Joao was known as the family’s energetic child, passionate about football. He was an active kid, always chasing the ball with enthusiasm. Unlike most toddlers his age, Joao showed an early inclination towards football. He kicked the ball in a manner that seemed to foreshadow his future path.

Joao Neves Early Life:

From his earliest days, he and his whole family members harboured a deep passion for Benfica. Joao’s support for the team was almost innate, and the Benfica passion increased when he became part of the club’s academy. Always full of energy, he was the boy who would skip steps, effortlessly kick, and skillfully catch soccer balls. Indeed, those around him recognized him as Pedro Neves’ son, an astute young lad with a football prowess destined for greater heights.

Demonstrating his exceptional talent, Joao, born in 2004, competed in football against peers born a year earlier in 2003. His love for the game sparked as early as age one, the moment he discovered what a soccer ball was.

From then on, he was inseparable from it—even a leg fracture during training couldn’t keep him away. Despite his injury, which this biography will delve into later, Joao persisted in his early passion. Even on crutches, his desire to remain connected to the ball was undeniable.

Joao’s football journey evolved notably from its humble beginnings in the Algarve, specifically at the renowned Casa do Benfica de Tavira, close to his family home. His formal training with an official club commenced at the tender age of five at the Algarve Training Center, a precursor to his engagement with his dream club, Benfica.

It’s worth noting for our readers that Joao’s initial forays into football were guided by two significant mentors. His father, Pedro, was his first coach, laying the groundwork for his burgeoning skills. Later, he received coaching under the stewardship of Gonçalo Ramos’ father, fortifying his technique and further tying his journey to that of his future Benfica teammate.

Joao Neves Family Background:

Starting off, the Athlete’s Dad, Pedro, was more than just a football coach. He had a history deeply rooted in the sport, having been a professional player himself. Records indicate that Pedro Neves carved out a successful career, notably achieving a district championship title with Futebol Clube de Serpa.

In his era, aspirations in football were often locally oriented. Pedro played primarily for his local team. He prioritized staying close to his roots and family over seeking opportunities far afield.

Following his retirement from football, Joao’s father, Pedro, shifted his focus. He went into footvolley and hiking. Pedro continued to pioneer a lifelong commitment to athleticism within the Neves family.

Indeed, the spirit of sport, particularly football, resonated deeply in his household. João, his son, grew up immersed in the vibrant Benfica reds, a testament to the family’s togetherness and enduring passion.

Now, we’ll explore the professions of Joao Neves’ parents. We’ll explain how their careers and interests—so intertwined with sport—helped shape their son. Giving Joao a nurturing environment that contributed to his successful upbringing as a Defensive Midfielder.

Portuguese local media frequently highlight that Joao Neves hails from a family where discipline and athleticism are paramount. Put simply, the footballer is the son of a police officer (his Dad) and a physical education teacher (his Mum).

His father, Pedro Neves, in addition to serving as a Public Security Police officer, devoted time to mentoring young talents as a football coach. Coach Pedro also indulged his athletic side through his enthusiasm for footvolley and hiking. This background underscores a deep familial bond with sports. It also speaks to how his occupations have likely played a role in shaping Joao’s path.

Growing up with a father who was a police officer and a mother who taught physical education had a profound influence on Joao’s formative years. From a young age, he was instilled with discipline and a strong sense of responsibility—values he continues to uphold today.

At Casa do Benfica in Tavira, where Joao Neves’ father, Pedro, took the helm as coach, a notable ethos of discipline was reflected in the dressing of the young players. Pedro insisted that jerseys be tucked into shorts at all times. This was a small but significant mandate to prevent any appearance of untidiness or lack of commitment.

Have you observed that Joao still adheres to this practice of tucking his football jersey into his shorts? Indeed, João Neves, much like Manchester City’s legend Rodri, upholds the somewhat old-school tradition. For Joao, this is more than a style choice. It’s a meaningful nod to the values instilled in him by his beloved father, symbolizing respect and adherence to the principles he was taught from a young age.

Joao Neves Family Origin:

The Defensive Midfielder proudly carries Portuguese nationality, a heritage he inherited from his parents, both natives of Portugal. Although Joao Neves was born in Tavira, his familial roots stretch back to the Alentejo region in Portugal. Specifically to Terra Forte in the city of Serpa, his family’s ancestral home.

Joao is often recognized as the renowned son of Pedro, a native of Serpense who made his mark by representing multiple clubs across the Portuguese region. This background ties Joao Neves deeply to his cultural legacy, grounding his identity in his family’s history and regional pride.

As earlier stated, Joao Neves began his football journey in the Algarve, at Casa do Benfica de Tavira, close to where his family resides. For the aspiring young footballers in his hometown of Tavira, João has become a figure of admiration and inspiration, representing what one can achieve with dedication and passion for the sport. Joao Neves Ethnicity:

The European country he comes from, Portugal, is characterized by its own unique ethnic and cultural identity. Put simply, João Neves identifies with the Portuguese people of Portugal. The same goes for most of his national team colleagues, the likes of Goncalo Inacio and Bruno Fernandes.

Joao Neves Education:

From the onset, Pedro ensured he picked up a football career and continued his studies. As a little kid, Joao Neves attended Paio Peres Correia School in Tavira. While there, in his 5th or 6th year, he was lucky to have Professor Domingos Ramalho as his music education teacher. The teachings of Domingos Ramalho made Joao fall in love with music as he did with football.

Even without being a big football fan (early on), Domingos Ramalho, Joao’s former music teacher, had found himself attracted to the game because of Joao. He loves to watch his former student on TV, whom he is proud of. In his words,

“I only follow my village club, Amareleja”, he admits with a laugh. “But when João Neves plays, I watch the game; I like to see him come in and see him succeed”, he says proudly.

When Joao Neves joined his childhood club (Benfica), he attended one of Benfica’s schools, in Tavira in Seixal, very close to the club’s training centre. Then, Joao lived on the south bank (in a football boarding facility) close to the Benfica facilities. He, like other footballers, attended school using the club’s van. Such proximity was necessary, so he must be focused on his career and educational objectives.

Career Buildup:

In the city, those who know Joao Neves are always proud of him as a person as well as his career. This came at a time when the footballer attended a Benfica school in Tavira. Nuno Encarnação was, at the time, the coordinator of the Benfica football schools in Tavira. He remembers a national tournament organized in 2012 by Sporting in which Joao helped his team to become the winner.

João, who was just eight years old, was the top scorer on the field. The tournament was his first confrontation with Benfica’s biggest direct opponent, Sporting CP. Nuno Encarnação, the Physical Education teacher at the school Joao attended, contributed a lot to his early rise. He made Joao play against older players and praised the physical capacity that Pedro’s son demonstrated from an early age.

Joao Neves Biography – Football Story:

At the age of eight, while still living in his parents’ house, he moved to the Benfica Training Center in the Algarve. This training centre was initially operated in Paderne, a village in the municipality (concelho) of Albufeira, in the Portuguese region of Algarve.

The centre was later moved to Ferreiras, in the southern Portuguese municipality of Albufeira. Given that Joao was still very young, it was impossible for him to live there alone. So, every day, four times every week, Joao Neves’ Dad had to travel 120 kilometres to have his son train and play football.

It is indeed true that Life began for Joao when he was about eight or nine years old. First, it was difficult for him to leave his kindergarten classmates and childhood club for greener pastures. Despite the long distance, his parents still agreed to have their son enrolled with the football team, CFT do Algarve.

Moving 60 kilometres four times a week from his home, Joao met an important figure for his career development. That person is Manuel Ramos, father of Gonçalo Ramos. He also met Manuel’s assistant, Tiago Faustino. These influential persons coached Pedro’s son for three seasons.

João Neves’ football trajectory was meteoric with the team. Thanks to his brilliance, the youngster, in no time, rose to become the team captain of CFT do Algarve. Let’s recall that he has been a captain from his earlier club, Casa Benfica Tavira. In fact, Joao was the only boy in the 2004 set (players born that year) that was made by his coach to compete with Athletes who were three years older.

The imbalance was great and even for his development, and it revealed Joao’s true character as a person as well as on the pitch. He was a super dedicated Athlete who never gave up, always wanted to be better and kept trying until he succeeded. Each time things were going wrong, he would be seen brooding, showing sadness, anger and looking worried when his team or himself failed to deliver on the pitch.

After attending his Benfica school in Tavira, football became the next focus for João. He would go to the training centre in Paderne, also in the Algarve, to attend Manuel Ramos’ training session. He was always in the company of André Gomes, a goalkeeper born in 2004 who was in his team.

Joao Neves Biography – Road to Fame Story:

In 2016, João Neves moved from the Algarve to Lisbon. He joined Benfica’s main academy and began to live at the Benfica Campus in Seixal. While living at the campus, Joao cross path with a new friend and fellow footballer named Pedro Santos. He, at the time of writing, is now a professional footballer for the Benfica B team.

The day he feared being expelled from Seixal:

One day, both Joao and Pedro Santos feared that they were going to be expelled from Benfica. The reason was because of a sports drink known as Powerade. When Joao and his new friend were training earlier, the coach gave them some of the drink.

The Powerade sports drink did not satisfy them, and it was only a few of the drink that was approved for them to consume. Joao and his friend wanted more, by all means – even if it was to steal them from the Benfica drink store.

In their desire to fulfil their desire, Joao and his friend went around to find where they had stored the Powerade drink. Unfortunately, the door needed to access the drink was locked.  Joao Neves acted like a thief, and somehow, they found a way to access the door.

When the boys entered the room, they were shocked to see lots of bottles of Powerade drink. In fact, the energy drink they wanted by all means was arranged from the floor to the ceiling.

Immediately, the boys began to collect as many Powerade drinks as they could, filling their backpacks. One of Benfica’s security guards caught them but was unable to apprehend the boys.

Caught red-handed:

When Joao discovered they had been busted, he and his friend immediately ran away with their backpacks filled with drinks. Joao and his friend consumed their stolen Powerade drink before they went to school and after they had returned from school.

To the surprise of the boys, the Powerade theft incident became a hot topic, and a call for investigation began. Joao and his friend were discovered to be the culprits through the surveillance cameras. In fact, they were images from the surveillance cameras which exposed them. It was at this point that Joao and his friends knew they had been caught, and there was no way they would deny it.

The following day, the Benfica Academy office called them to director Nuno Gomes’ office for a meeting. It is pertinent to state that Nuno Gomes was the club’s director at that time. Before that meeting, the boys feared for their careers as they thought we were going to be punished or dismissed.

Thankfully, Joao and his friend weren’t expelled. Rather, they were given a punishment, one that they gladly accepted. The boys were banned from going to see the main team’s games for a few weeks at the Estádio da Luz. Back then, Joao and his teammate never missed Benfica’s main games. They were sorry for their wrong deeds and served their punishment, which lasted for just a few weeks.

Showing promise:

The Powerade incident did not limit his performance on the pitch. Nuno Gomes, the director of Benfica’s academy at Futebol Campus in Seixal, believed in Joao’s abilities. In fact, he was one of those kids that Benfica Academy’s management believed had the potential to reach both the main and national teams in no distant time.

Joao Neves consistently demonstrated remarkable maturity, a testament to the principles his parents had ingrained in him. As his football career entered a critical phase, he encountered fresh challenges and rivalries. Joao also made new friends. He became close friends with António Silva, André Gomes, and Hugo Félix. Their bond was brotherly, and the three would spend countless hours in conversation and camaraderie both off and on the field.

Joao Neves Biography – Rising to Fame:

The determination to succeed began yielding fruits in the 2021/2022 football season. Joao played a crucial role in helping his Benfica team win their first UEFA Youth League title. His Benfica U19 side topped their group against Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Dynamo Kyiv. In the final, Joao was instrumental in his side’s relentless and clinical performance that saw them beat Red Bull Salzburg 6–0.

Do you know?… That was Benfica’s first title in European football since their 1961–62 European Cup win. Approaching the age of 18, the boys spent their last year at Benfica’s accommodation, the Seixal residence. Joao and his friends had to look for a home of their own. They left their old residence, a place filled with lots of memories that shaped their character.

When Joao won two titles – the Campeonato Nacional de Juniores and the Intercontinental Cup (Under-20), it was clear that he would get a Benfica senior team call. Unfortunately, he, at that time, was confronted by a serious ligament injury. João Neves was seriously injured and had to be taken from the field for several months.

During his rehabilitation, Joao couldn’t stop himself from visiting the training ground. He moved with the support of his crutches, and always by his side was Vanessa Rosa, one of Benfica’s psychologists. Here, an injured Joao Neves and the psychologist leaned against the short fence and watched his Benfica’s under-19 teammates training.

Becoming a professional:

Following his recovery from an injury, Joao Neves exhibited the qualities of an athlete relentlessly pursuing excellence. This drive earned him a coveted spot to train with the senior team, remarkably early at just 18.

The timing was perfect for Joao and a proud moment for his family as he inked his professional contract. His advancement was particularly opportune, coinciding with the departure of Enzo Fernandes, a senior team member in his position, who had recently moved to Graham Potter’s Chelsea squad.

Following the departure of 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Enzo Fernández to Chelsea, Benfica manager Roger Schmidt approved Joao Neves as his replacement. The German coach saw that the kid was a hard worker and he had a lot of energy. With his short height, maturity and quality passing, he reminded everyone of the Porguguese Legend João Moutinho.

In the concluding months of the 2022/2023 season, Joao Neves secured his spot in Benfica’s starting lineup. His selection came after he outperformed Florentino Luís. Neves marked his breakthrough with his first goal for the club in a fierce derby match against Sporting CP.

As he gained more playing time, the midfielder’s contributions on the pitch were pivotal for Benfica. It helped the club clinch their first league championship in four years – on the league campaign’s final day. The rest, as we say, of his career story is now history.
