After scouting him, FC Porto’s aim was to convince Bobb’s mum to give the full approval for them to sign her talented son. The Portuguese giants didn’t stop there. FC Porto went as far as to pay for Oscar and his Mum to travel to Portugal to visit and inspect the club’s facilities.

The Porto Experience:

Although Oscar Bobb gave her approval, she knew there were constraints as her son was a minor from another country. She told the club they were from Norway and that her son wasn’t always available. Turid then asked if Oscar could play with their academy whenever she travelled to Porto for her work. Because of their intense love for the boy wonder, FC Porto agreed to allow Oscar into their team informally.

For roughly the next two years, Turid Gunnes and her son would regularly visit Porto for work. The reason for visiting Portugal was to prepare a collaboration between PELE and her employer, Nordic Black Theater Company. FC Porto paid for trips so Bobb could visit the club, and in October 2015, his mother made a decision. Turid Gunnes agreed she would immigrate to Portugal. A month after she arrived in Portugal for a job, Turid Gunnes signed a declaration that her son should be registered with the Portuguese Football Federation. All these efforts were made so that her son would have the green light to become a member of Portuguese football. She had hoped that when the application was approved, FC Porto would get the go-ahead to allow Oscar Bobb to participate in the national youth championship.

FIFA Rejection:

Unfortunately, the request was rejected as there were questions regarding her purpose of coming to Portugal. In that document, Turid Gunnes explained that after becoming interested in community projects of a social nature, she decided to visit Porto City. Bobb’s Mum also stated that having met a Portuguese woman in Oslo (Norway) who was part of the Directorate-General for the Arts, she ended up visiting a community theatre initiative in Porto in 2013. Then later, in 2015, she started working as a theatre and dance academy teacher in Vila Nova de Gaia, a Portuguese municipality.

Also, in the document she submitted, Turid Gunnes stressed that it was following her professional contacts in Portugal that his son later went to train for FC Porto. FIFA didn’t approve Turid Gunnes’ request as they had issues with Bobb’s relationship with FC Porto, which the football body believed began in 2013.

It was revealed that Turid Gunnes’ decision to leave Norway for Portugal was purely for professional reasons. She first moved to Portugal on her own, without her kids. While in Portugal, Turid found the need to remain in the country and for her children to be with her. Following the decision, Oscar Bobb’s family remained in Porto, and her mom took a job with Kale, a dance and theatre company in the city.

The Beginning of Legal Issues:

Soon, words came out from FIFA as they stated Article 19, which relates to the protection of minors. It states that international transfers of young footballers are permitted only if the player is over the age of 18. At that time, Bobb had begun to wear the Porto Dragons’ jersey in Portugal. Sadly, the club knew they were unable to keep him. FIFA had suspected at that time that FC Porto was violating that organization’s rules for the protection of minors.

It was difficult for Turid Gunnes to send her son back to Norway, so she decided to keep little Oscar with her in Porto. Since Porto wouldn’t formally accept her son due to FIFA rule, Turid attempted to enrol Oscar with another team named AJ Escola de Futebol Hernâni Gonçalves in Porto City.

In a new request for approval of Bobb’s registration, FIFA wrote to the football school asking the institution to certify that it had no formal or informal relationship with FC Porto. Following protocol, the club submitted Oscar Bobb’s registration to FIFA for approval. In that application, the president of the club stated that they have no links with FC Porto. The club also affirmed that they first learned of Bobb in January 2017 when his mum, Turid, arrived at their facility unannounced.

Second FIFA Rejection:

FIFA was not convinced by the second application. The football body believed that Oscar Bobb’s family’s move to Portugal in the autumn of 2015 was not prepared. Also, the move was organized by FC Porto. FIFA believed it was organized according to documents by the German magazine “Der Spiegel” from the Football platform. Also, there were leaks shared with the EIC (European Investigative Collaborations) consortium and analyzed by the Norwegian newspaper VG and Expresso.

Because of the above statement from FIFA, the attempt to make Bobb’s transfer in January 2017 to the Hernâni Gonçalves football school, which is based in Porto, also ended up failing. Not satisfied with FIFA’s decision, Oscar Bobb’s mum, Turid, took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sports. In other words, Turid Gunnes decided to sue FIFA for refusing her son to join a new club and enrolling in the Portuguese Football Association.

The verdict:

Turid Gunnes’ decision to head to court angered FIFA, and the football body had to act legally. The issue between Bobb’s mother reached a decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. At court, Judge asked for answers to the following questions;

The rule bars clubs from signing foreign players under the age of 18 except in three limited circumstances.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said that Oscar’s mom, Turid, had moved to Portugal for one reason.
