Upon Wout’s birth, his parents and two siblings observed another behaviour. That observation happened at the time he started to walk.

Early on, Wout got fond of rolling up his full diapers and shooting them off the stairs. As he did that, little did anyone know the boy was simply warming up for the future ahead of him.

The Striker’s nationality is the Netherlands. And in the Eastern region of the Netherlands lies Borne, a town with approximately 23,000 inhabitants.

This municipality, in the Netherlands’ Overijssel province, is where Wout Weghorst has his family’s origin.

Borne is a municipality in the region of Twente and close to the German border. The people from this town have the nickname Melbuul.

Until the beginning of the industrial age, Wout’s origin, Borne, was an agricultural town, characterised mostly by plaggen soil and extensive cattle farming.

In ancient times, Lower Saxony was inhabited predominantly by Germanic tribal peoples. Led by Duke Widukind, they engaged in a series of legendary conflicts with Charlemagne during the late eighth century.

Wout Weghorst’s Education:

Schooling, for the Dutch Superstar, started from his family home. Wout Weghorst’s parents were his first teachers, and they had a key role in shaping his character.

For the Dutch, the idea of going to school was his Plan B rather than an A. Plan A was no other than the quest to become a footballer.

After agreeing with his parents, Wout ensured he never disappointed them in terms of going to school. The Dutch footballer studied in Holland up to the university level. The Baller’s quest for education is similar to that of Mikel Oyarzabal, the Spanish footballer.

According to our research, Wout has two University degrees. The first is a degree in Business Administration. Wout’s idea for this course came because of the need to use Business Administration knowledge in the family’s oil and gas business.

The Striker’s second bachelor’s degree is more inclined to his football career. Also, at the university level, Wout got a degree in Top Sports Management and Entrepreneurship.

Career Buildup:

Before agreeing to educate himself up to the University level, there was a disagreement with his Dad and Mum. Astrid and Frans were astonished as regards what Wout wanted to do in life. He told them he wanted to be a footballer – against the wish of his parents.

The truth is, none of Wout Weghorst’s family members had pursued professional football careers, and his parents preferred their sons to pursue other professions, particularly those aligned with the family business or considered prestigious.

In their efforts to understand their sons’ (Twan, Ralf, Wout, and Niek) aspirations in life, Astrid and Frans became concerned by their third son’s response.

The Career Choice:

Wout Weghorst’s parents became worried that he (their third son) was chasing an impossible dream. They weren’t comfortable with his idea of wanting to become a professional footballer. Rather, they told him to have a rethink.

Wout Weghorst’s parents, Astrid and Frans Weghorst, encouraged him to consider an alternative career path instead of football. They felt he should follow the examples set by his older brothers. The eldest son, Twan, had his sights set on becoming a pilot, while Ralf pursued a career in architecture. The youngest brother, Niek, agreed to a course of study that aligned with the family business.

In the end, Wout found his way. He was stubborn about being a footballer – which he pledged to. The highly intelligent boy also assured his parents of going to school. Hence, the two degrees he got.

Wout Weghorst Biography – Untold Football Story:

As stated earlier, the aspiring Baller didn’t agree with his parents in terms of career choice. Wout held on to his beliefs – that he would follow the path to become a professional star in footballer.

Even the well-meaning intervention of those close to his family failed to improve matters. In Wout’s own words:

Countless well-meaning people urged me to give up football.

“They told me, ‘Forget football — you’re not good enough’,”

These were the words of Wout Weghorst – during his interview with Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.

As he rejected their advice, there came this perception about him. Lots of People tagged Wout’s dedication to football as delusional.

This is simply because he wasn’t even good at the sport. One thing that kept Wout going was his outstanding mentality. Also, he had a never-give-up approach in his quest to improve as a young footballer.

Wout Weghorst’s Early Life – The Years in the Academy:

Wout Weghorst started out by playing at an amateur level with his local team, NEO.

Then, he certainly didn’t look like he would make it far. Put simply, Wout was one of the worst footballers among his teammates. Despite that, the youngster always believed he had what it takes to make it in the game.

Wout Weghorst’s Early Years at Academy Football. Can you recognize him?

The truth is, Wout Weghorst’s self-belief in his footballing abilities emerged at a time when nobody else shared his confidence.

At some point, his parents (notably his mum, Astrid Weghorst) began supporting him and finding ways to help him in his football quest.

Wout Weghorst Biography – Road to Fame Story:

While he played amateur football at NEO and later at DETO (2010 to 20211), Wout (again) didn’t look like the ideal Superstar. In fact, his early playing days were similar to that of Denzel Dumfries. Both had the passion but weren’t that good in football.

At this time, Wout played for DETO Twenterand academy, whose senior team plays in the fourth division side of Dutch football. Just like Jamie Vardy, all he needed was a way up. Luckily, that came through a link from one of Wout Weghorst’s parents (his Mum).

How Family connection gave him an uplift:

The Football-focused kid wanted a bigger club even though he didn’t match the skill level to pass football trials.

As luck would have it, Wout Weghorst got himself in Willem II Tilburg, a Dutch football club in Tilburg. That wouldn’t have happened if not for family connections. If not for his beloved mother (Astrid).

Luckily, Wout Weghorst’s mother (Astrid) was friends with the wife of Jan van Esch, the then-director of Willem II. Each time she meets her friends, they’ll discuss their children.

While they talked, Astrid Weghorst (Wout’s Mum) would always speak well about her son’s football ambitions. That got her friend so excited about the boy’s mentality. As a way of contributing her quota to the boy, she told her husband about her friend’s son, Wout.

So inspired, Jan van Esch (Astrid’s friend’s husband) decided to send scouts to watch her son. The scouting report on Wout Weghorst didn’t disappoint. It came out successfully. That was how Wout made his way to the Eredivisie team, Willem II.

Personal Challenges:

For the Dutch star, being with a new team came with new challenges. It wasn’t only about the need to improve his gameplay. Wout began suffering from a growth spurt. The surge in his height – during his teenage years – resulted in more technical deficiencies.

“I had problems sorting my feet out,”

The then-thin, lanky striker once said in an interview with 11 Freunde magazine.

When the Going Got Tough:

After graduating from Willem II Academy, the club’s management did not find Wout worthy of competing with the club’s first team.

Despite being given the chance to break into the first team, Wout never managed to secure a spot, which left the club frustrated.

In response, they sell him to available suitors. They sold Wout to FC Emmen, a lower Dutch division side. This club, at the time, played in the lower division of Netherlands football.

The Last Academy Years:

Scoring a dozen goals in his first season earned him a move to Heracles Almelo, where he played under the coaching of Peter Bosz.

For Wout, playing with top-level professionals was a strange but also an unwelcome eye-opener. The Dutch footballer observed everything moving way too fast for his liking.

Nevertheless, Weghorst didn’t give up. Even though he was blessed with far less natural talent than the surrounding footballers.

Day in, day out, all he did was find a way to improve his game. During that time, Wout had an in-depth self-analysis and also had extra training hours.

More Challenges:

When he needed time to show his worth, they came many doubters who questioned his gameplay.

Wout still played amateur football at 20, and there were a lot of teammates who played the game – more for fun. These were footballers (mostly his teammates) who went to parties mostly on Friday evenings.

For Wout, his goal was to push hard and become a professional. Though it wasn’t easy, he was someone who was always willing to work on himself. In his words…

I never thought that I couldn’t make it.

My parents said I should also see what I want to do later if it doesn’t work out.

But I always said: ‘No, I can do it and become a better professional!

He was disliked by some of his club Fans:

Thanks to the dedication, more goals followed. By 2015, Wout got lucky to be signed by AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie. This is a big Dutch club that is behind the rise of top talents like Teun Koopmeiners and Tijjani Reijnders.

Even now, some fans continue to doubt him, criticizing him for being too ungainly for Dutch football’s tastes. Many AZ fans claimed he relied too much on brute force, which didn’t fit their ideal image of a striker.

This section of fans said they prefer their strikers to be fast and tricky. Or to be an elegant footballer – in the Dennis Bergkamp mould. Years later, these fans got a fast player – in the person of Myron Boadu.

The truth is, Weghorst’s old-fashioned striking routine, by contrast, failed to get pulses of his own fans racing.

To make matters worse, Wout’s angry demeanour on the pitch got lots of disapproval. He was the type who often caused commotion on the field. The Dutch striker would sometimes argue a lot with the referees, opponents, and even coaches.

Wout Weghorst Bio – Success Story:

Thankfully, the Dutch footballer started the 2017–18 season with excellent form. Wout scored 20 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions.

Such a feat earned him his first international call-up. It was with Ronald Koeman‘s first Dutch squad of March 2018.

Once again, to silence his critics, Wout Weghorst concluded the season as the joint-third top scorer in the Eredivisie.

He had 18 goals – a tie with Steven Berghuis. Both were behind the top scorers – Alireza Jahanbakhsh (with 21) and runner-up Bjørn Johnsen (with 19).

Az fans, who heavily criticized him, began loving their man after he scored these goals for them.

The Die Wölfe German Call:

Shortly after the conclusion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, VfL Wolfsburg made waves with the announcement of Wout Weghorst’s signing on a four-year contract.

Wolfsburg’s sporting director – Olaf Rebbe – sought to acquire Wout after his campaign that had yielded 18 goals for Alkmaar (AZ). This is a video of his emotional farewell to AZ fans.

Joining VfL Wolfsburg means leaving behind his parents and brothers for the first time. On the 16th day of March 2019, Wout scored his first hat trick for the German outfit.

By doing that, he became the first player for the club to do that since Mario Gómez in April 2017.

Joining the Big Names:

To illustrate his commitment to top form, Wout concluded his first season with Wolfsburg by scoring 17 goals. As observed below, he was among five players who achieved the same goal tally.

The names include the persons of Andrej Kramaric, Kai Havertz, Luka Jovic and Marco Reus.

Only Paco Alcacer (BVB) and Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) scored more goals than Wout Weghorst. Seasons afterwards, The Dutch striker in a ‘target man’ type role kept producing more impressive goal returns.

Without a doubt, Weghorst has proven to the world something. That a big part of being and feeling confident is believing in oneself.

The Dutch footballer’s rise to top-flight football is like the story of Jamie Vardy. No wonder the Athletic calls him Holland’s taller, chunkier answer to Leicester. Thanks to his Mum and others who stood by him, Wout finally realized his football dream.

While he may not have been the most naturally skilled player from the outset, Wout’s remarkable mentality has propelled him to overcome numerous obstacles. The remainder of his biography is history in the making.

He never drinks or goes clubbing:

Wout has a very different attitude toward life. Back in the day, his teammates at NEO often go to parties days before games. He desists from partying or clubbing.

The Dutch Baller maintained his stands even though he was blessed with far less natural talent than those around him. Wout had the mentality to do extra shifts. He doesn’t do an in-depth self-analysis – with the belief that he would improve his game.

He is Arrogant for what he believes are the wrong things:

On the pitch, Wout is the type who often likes to argue with referees and opponents. He is very quick to speak his mind. Sometimes, he also argues with coaches.

If somebody doesn’t act professionally towards him, he’d tell them straight to their face. During his Emmen U-21 days, Wout publicly complained about food injustice. He argued about pre-match meals consisting of burgers, mashed potato balls and deep-fried chicken.

Because he has the tendency to grow big, the Dutch footballer is always watchful about his diet. Also, he does extra training sessions and daily-study videos of himself. The Baller watches these videos (and others) in order to find ways to improve his movement in the box.

Back in the day, Weghorst watched a programme about loneliness among older people. It touched him. Because of that, he vowed to devote some hours in his week to visiting an elderly man. Wout did that over the course of many months.

AZ fans got to find out after a TV show revealed his old friend had passed away. The old man’s sickness and eventual death left Wout very worried and upset.

After mourning the man’s death, Wout made a resolution. He said he wouldn’t spend time with any specific person again. This came due to the fear of being too emotionally involved.

Wout Weghorst Liverpool Dream:

Did you know?… The huge 1.97m (6 foot 6 inches) striker one had an England dream. It is no other than his desire to play for Liverpool.

As earlier recalled, Jari Litmanen (his idol) played for the Reds. That could be the reason why Wout supported Liverpool as a child. It also explains why he dreams to play for them.

Wout Weghorst Religion:

The Dutch professional footballer has so far not identified himself as part of an ideological group. The same goes for his parents and brothers, as observed in their social media profiles. They join 54% of Dutch citizens who have no religious beliefs.

EndNote:

Wout Weghorst’s biography tells the story of a boy from a wealthy family who defied all odds to pursue his cherished dream. Like Jamie Vardy, he climbed from the lower ranks of Dutch football to reach the pinnacle. He followed his heart and ignored the suggestion to give up.

It’s important to note that Wout’s parents are multi-millionaires, owning AVIA Weghorst, a well-known oil and gas company in the Netherlands. Despite his family’s wealth, Wout sought a life distinct from theirs.

As a child, Wout Weghorst’s parents expressed worry about him. Astrid and Frans got worried about his decision to chase what they call an impossible dream. They wanted Wout to choose a more reputable career. Just like what his brothers had chosen to become in life.

Twan, his older brother, pledged to become a pilot. Niek Weghorst, his immediate senior, agreed to become an Architect. The last born of the family (Niek) pledged to take care of their family’s business. In the end, Wout followed football as well as got an education.

Bravery in the face of Challenges:

The Dutch footballer started football with NEO. He then moved to DETO – as an average player. Countless of well-meaning people urged him to give up football. They told him he wasn’t good enough. The young Lad proved stubborn and never listened to their advice.

Weghorst’s Mother (Astrid) stood by her son in the face of his early career crisis. She got him an opportunity to Willem II through her friend. A growth spurt affected Wout’s teenage years, which he overcame. Next came criticism from his fans, which he also overcame.

In the end, the Dutch footballer achieved a meteoric top-flight football rise – similar to that witnessed by Armando Broja in England. Wout Weghorst’s Biography makes us understand the fact that drive is more important than talent. Erik ten Hag exemplifies that too.
