Soccer wasn’t a big deal for Chris or his family in Alabama. His dad, Ken, played basketball in college at Birmingham-Southern and then played basketball in places like Iceland, Bolivia, and Australia. His mom, Carrie, used to play soccer when she was young, but she stopped because there weren’t many teams for girls back then. The family mostly cared about basketball because it was more popular in Alabama.

At first, everyone thought Chris would play basketball like his dad. “My husband always wanted Chris to play basketball,” Carrie said. But things didn’t turn out that way.

Chris started playing soccer to stay active but quickly showed he was good at it. “We put him in a rec league, but it wasn’t challenging enough,” Carrie said. By the time the budding athlete was eight or nine, he joined a club soccer team where he could play better and learn more. Even though soccer wasn’t popular in Alabama, the Alabama native had big dreams and talent that surprised everyone.

Chris Richard Family Background:

The Crystal Palace star grew up in a family that always supported each other despite tough times. Chris Richards’ parents, Ken and Carrie Richards, didn’t know much about soccer. They were as clueless as Myles Lewis-Skelly‘s mother and father when their child began his journey.

Ken had played basketball all over the world, so basketball was familiar, but soccer was new to them. They weren’t sure how to help their son improve at soccer because they didn’t know the best options in the U.S.

Things became even more challenging in 2008 when the Great Recession happened. Chris Richards’s father lost his job because his business closed, and the family had to decide what they could and couldn’t pay for. Carrie remembered those tough times and how they had to determine what was most important.

Even though money was tight, Ken made sure Chris could keep playing soccer. “We couldn’t afford soccer,” Carrie said, “but my husband made sure we gave up other things so the Birmingham boy could follow his dream.” Their love and support for Chris showed how much they believed in him, even when it meant making enormous sacrifices.

Family Origin:

When it comes to the footballer’s identity, in his words, he said, “I was too black for the white kids but too white for the black kids”. This statement is true because of Chris Richards’s family ancestry.

According to reports, the Crystal Palace centre-back’s mother is white, while his Father, Ken Richards, is a black native. This means he carries African and European ancestry, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of his parents. Interestingly, Chris is among the bandwagon of footballers like Kyle Walker (RB), Mason Holgate (CB), Rico Lewis and Tyrone Mings, whose dad and mum come from different races.

However, let’s get to know about Chris Richards’s hometown. Birmingham is a city in the middle of Alabama, a state in the United States. It is the central city of Jefferson County, with the most people living in it in all of Alabama. Here is the illustration of the birthplace of the former Bayern Munich centre-back.

Ethnicity:

As a result, having a white mother and a black father automatically makes Chris Richards’s ethnicity biracial. Interestingly, despite the mixed heritage, it had never deterred the athlete’s performance.

The Early Steps of Chris Richards Football Career:

The hardworking athlete grew up loving soccer, but his journey to becoming a star wasn’t easy. As a young player in Alabama, his team won a big state trophy, which was exciting! But they realised how tough it was when they started playing against the best teams from other states like Georgia and Texas.

Did you know that the young defender started as a midfielder? How did he change into the position for which he is famous? One day, when a teammate got hurt, Chris played as a defender. He loved it! From then on, being a centre-back became his favourite position.

When Chris was just 10 years old, he wrote down his dreams on a sticky note. He wanted to play on the best teams, get a college scholarship, and play professional soccer in the U.S. Back then, playing in Europe didn’t even cross his mind it was an impossible mission.

ODP Opportunity

One day, Chris got a chance to try out for the Olympic Development Program (ODP). This program helps kids from places without big soccer teams get noticed. Chris worked hard and joined the regional team, where he travelled to compete against kids from other parts of the U.S. This opened doors for Chris, especially when he went to a special camp at IMG Academy and even travelled to Argentina to play. These changes helped college coaches and scouts notice him.

A Hard Lesson: FC Dallas

Chris’s dad, Ken, wanted to find more opportunities for Chris. He reached out to a coach at FC Dallas, a big soccer team known for helping young players. Chris got a chance to try out for their academy team, but he didn’t make it. He was heartbroken. His mom, Carrie, said it was the first time her child didn’t make a team he tried out for.

Surprise Call from Houston:

Not long after, Chris’s luck changed. One of his coaches from ODP told another coach in Houston, named Eric Quill, about the fast rising talent. Eric called Chris’s family and invited him to join his Texans SC team in Houston. The American newbie would live with a host family and play soccer there.

This move was a big deal for Chris. Eric Quill became a very important coach, helping him grow as a player and opening doors to an even bigger soccer world. Chris’s journey wasn’t always easy, but his hard work and determination helped him reach his dreams.

Road to Fame:

Chris Richards’ journey to Bayern Munich was a big step in his soccer career. It all started when Jochen Sauer, the head of Bayern’s youth academy, noticed the centre-back during a 10-day training session in Munich. The training was hosted by Bayern for FC Dallas, Chris’s team at the time.

For the lad, it was like a dream come true—Bayern is one of the best soccer teams in the world! Soon, Bayern and FC Dallas agreed on a loan, and Chris got to spend six months playing and training in Germany.

Chris fit in quickly in the German team. His first exciting moment was joining Bayern’s team for the Audi Summer Tour. He played in the International Champions Cup with famous players like Franck Ribery and Javi Martinez. Playing with such big stars showed Chris what it takes to be a top player.

Bayern liked Chris, so they gave him a permanent spot on their Group B team when his loan ended. The timing was perfect because another young player, Alphonso Davies, had also joined. Alphonso was 18 years old, just like Chris, and spoke English too. The two became good friends as they worked hard to prove themselves on the world stage.

Back in the United States, people also noticed Chris. He was called up to the U.S. U20 national team and helped them win the CONCACAF Championship. In the final game, Chris played a big part in their 2-0 victory over Mexico, which gave the U.S. their second championship in a row.

As Chris kept improving at Bayern, his future looked terrific. He started dreaming of even more significant, like playing for the U.S. national team in the 2022 World Cup. Bayern Munich wasn’t just another team for the American—it was where he began to become a soccer star.

Rise to Fame Story:

Moving through the ranks of the German team, Chris soon became one of the senior teammates. However, because the likes of Benjamin Pavard and David Alaba were more experienced, which meant less game time allocated to the American athlete, he went on a loan. Richards joined TSG 1899 Hoffenheim with Georginio Rutter (AM), Ryan Sessegnon, and Gregor Kobel. However, the goalkeeper eventually returned to VfB Stuttgart.

After staying throughout the remainder of the 20/21 season, the centre-back still returned to complete the 21/22 year with them. No doubt everyone could see that Chris was undeniably a great talent and thus was wanted by the teams in the Premier League.

Having conquered the Bundesliga, Crystal Palace came calling for the American-born wonderkid. Since Chris’s arrival, the centre-back has played 46 games with one goal score. The basketball player’s son holds the defensive post with Marc Guehi and Maxence Lacroix. The rest is history, they said.

Personal Life:

Chris Richards is not just great at football; he’s also very stylish and creative. He loves to dress up in cool clothes, and people say he’s as fashionable as David Beckham. From neat hair to fabulous outfits, the Alabama star always looks fantastic.

The U.S. international also has a big love for basketball. When he was a kid in Alabama, he played basketball before choosing to focus on football. Even now, basketball is still unique to him. In his free time, he likes to shoot hoops or watch basketball games because it reminds him of where he started.

Chris Richard Family Life:

Without the sacrifices made by Chris Richards’s parents, his success would have been futile. However, not minding whatever financial loss they would incur, Ken and Carrie took a leap of faith in their child, and now the proof is a success. So, let’s get to know more about his amazing family.

They had to make tough choices to give the budding athlete the chance to chase his dream. Not many kids get to play soccer in college or become professional players, but Chris Richard’s family believed in him and worked hard to make it happen.

About Chris Richard’s Father:

Ken Richards was good at basketball and played in college at Birmingham–Southern. After that, he played basketball in Australia, Bolivia, and Iceland. Because of this, Chris Richard’s father made basketball a big part of their family when he was growing up.

That’s not all; Ken worked hard to teach Chris essential sports skills. He made special basketball drills for the young athlete to practice in their driveway and garage. These drills helped Chris become fast, handle the ball better, and see the court like a pro. Of course, they were responsible for making him a great point guard when he played for teams at Hoover High and in the AAU league.

And Chris Richard’s dad believed his first son could become an outstanding basketball player. A family friend named Gregg Polinsky, who worked in the NBA, also believed Chris could have gone far in basketball. If the American center-back had stayed with basketball, Ken thinks he could have played for a big college team.

But Chris decided to play football instead, and Ken was happy to support him. Ken’s belief in Chris and the lessons he taught helped the sports prodigy become great at football. In turn, the Bayern Munich player loves his parents for all they’ve done for him. He says his biggest dream is to care for them so they never have to work again. Their love and help have been part of Chris’s fantastic journey.

About Chris Richard’s Mother:

When Carrie was young, she loved soccer and played it, but there weren’t many chances for girls to keep playing where she lived. Soccer wasn’t very popular in Alabama, not when Carrie was little or even when Chris was growing up.

As Chris got older and better at soccer, it cost him a lot of money to play. Soccer wasn’t like basketball, where it’s easier to get scholarships that help pay for college. Soccer scholarships didn’t cover much, so Carrie and her family had to spend a lot on games and traveling to tournaments.

Sometimes, Carrie wondered if it was worth it because it was so expensive. High school sports didn’t cost money, but competitive soccer did. Even when things were hard, Chris Richard’s mother always believed in her child.

She cheered him on, helped him stay motivated, and encouraged him to dream big. When Chris joined Bayern Munich, the former sportswoman couldn’t believe it. Visiting the Allianz Arena in Munich and seeing the prodigy play was like a dream come true for her. She felt so proud and amazed.

About Chris Richards’ Siblings:

The Alabama native and his siblings love playing sports and spending time together as a family. Each of them has their favourite sport, but they all support each other no matter what.

Mackenzie, Chris’s sister, is great at volleyball. She works hard and loves being on the court. Their younger brother, Christian, plays both soccer and basketball. He enjoys running on the field and shooting hoops on the court. Maybe one day, Christian will continue their dad’s basketball story and make him proud.

Even though Chris decided to play soccer instead of basketball, his brother and sister are proud of him. They all love to play together in the backyard, cheer for each other during games, and celebrate each other’s wins.
