Kasper Schmeichel Family Origin:

Schmeichel, through his grandfather (a Danish musician), has his family roots in Poland and NOT Denmark, where many football fans think his ancestors come from.

Did you know?… His Grandfather, who goes by the name Tolek Schmeichel, immigrated to Denmark around 1960. Kasper’s granddad (Tolek) was a war child who had his dad (Kasper’s great-granddad) killed as a Polish Soldier during World War II.

His great-granddad being a Soldier means that the Kasper Schmeichel Family has Military Roots.

Tolek (Kasper’s Granddad) left Poland for Denmark, where his wife gave birth and raised his Legendary son Peter Schmeichel.

Peter Schmeichel’s strong mental fortitude, rooted in his military family background, combined with his impressive physique, helped him make a name for himself in football. He then passed these qualities on to his son, Kasper.

Peter, a football legend, was just 22 when his wife Bente gave birth to Kasper, making him a father for the first time. As a result, young Kasper enjoyed a privileged life thanks to his father’s fame.

He was the kind of kid whose parents could afford the newest collections of toys for him. Kasper didn’t grow up alone but alongside his sister, who goes by the name of Cecilie Schmeichel. Below is a photo of the lovely family during the early 1990s.

Kasper Schmeichel Childhood Story – Career Buildup and Education:

The Pre-Determined Destiny:

On a beautiful summer evening in the year 1991 before joining United, Kasper’s dad, Peter Schmeichel, was in his club’s (Brøndby IF) football clubhouse celebrating his fifth Danish league title.

He decided to have a little party, inviting his guests, who were mostly club fans.

As the invited fans were making their way into the party, a 4-year-old Kasper Schmeichel stood in front of the door entrance with a determined face saying to the visitors, “You all can’t come in here!”…….“Yes, we’re allowed, we were invited by your dad.

One of them answered as he gently ushered Kasper back to his mother, allowing his co-fans to go in. The party continued, and a few weeks later, Peter Schmeichel continued his successful career at Manchester United.

Fast forward to some 25 years later. Kasper wasn’t seen standing in the way of visitors, BUT this time, he was in the way of all kinds of football opponents aiming to put the ball behind him. Now, let’s give you a brief story of how the journey started.

What Motivated him to Follow his Dad’s Footsteps:

When Kasper was just 7 and 8 years old, in 1992 and 1993, his dad, Peter, was named the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper. Having a father who was not only the best goalkeeper in the world but also led Manchester United to numerous titles made it natural for young Kasper to want to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Peter's early career success motivated Kasper to follow in his footsteps.

Peter’s early career success motivated Kasper to follow in his footsteps.

Kasper spent much of his childhood enjoying his dad’s successful career. He started school in England due to his dad’s career and attended Hulme Hall Grammar School in Greater Manchester. Kasper was passionate about sports, even while keeping up with his studies. During school breaks, he often played as a goalkeeper with his friends, including Alex Bruce, the son of Steve Bruce, a former teammate of Kasper’s dad at Manchester United.

Kasper Schmeichel Biography – Early Career Life:

While other kid footballers begin their careers by joining a football academy, Kasper began his under his dad’s tutelage. Manchester United management allowed him to follow his legendary dad to training.

Early on, he was fond of standing behind the goalpost while Manchester United legends trained. Kasper would run to fetch wayward shots that had missed the goal and then go on to attend every single match at the famous Old Trafford.

Kasper Schmeichel’s dad ended his Manchester United career on the highest note after he guided United to win the 1999 Treble.

When Peter was 36, he decided to slow down the pace of his football career by joining Sporting CP in Portugal. This move meant that the entire Schmeichel family, including young Kasper, left England to start a new life in Portugal.

In the year 2000, while Kasper lived with his parents in Portugal, he enrolled in the Estoril football academy, commonly known as Grupo Desportivo Estoril. While at the academy, Kasper continued to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Most times, after training sessions, he would go on receiving extra lessons from his dad at Sporting CP. This happened from the year 1999 to 2001.

Road to Fame Story:

After two years in Portugal, the Schmeichel family felt it timed up staying in the country. Again, Kasper decided to leave the club this time, following his dad back to England, where he began playing for Aston Villa.

Kasper signed on with Man City, and after some months, he reunited with his dad, this time in the same club.

Did you know?… Both father and son made history by becoming the first goalkeepers playing for Man City Academy and the senior side in the year 2002.

When the Going Got Tough for Kasper:

Because he was not ready for graduation from the academy, Kasper could not easily fill in his dad’s shoes immediately after he retired from City and from football in 2003.

Being unable to wait, City went on to buy David James, who filled up Peter Schmeichel’s place.

After youth football graduation, Kasper, who assumed he was going to have a smooth sail into senior football, didn’t see things going for him as planned.

At that time, the senior goalkeeper position was occupied by Joe Hart, who was steadily rising in his career and considered irreplaceable. This situation left Kasper feeling frustrated.

Having had so much success over the years, it was hard for the Schmeichel family to deal with seeing their very own falling down the pecking order at Eastlands.

Looking out for options, Kasper Schmeichel began to journey through various snakes and ladders in order to get recognized as a first-team goalkeeper.

From 2006 to 2009, Kasper paid his dues by taking out loans and quickly launched his senior career with Bury, Falkirk, Notts County, and Leeds.

A saviour finally came to rescue Kasper. This time, it wasn’t his super father but Notts County manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, who helped him secure a first-team goalkeeping role with Leicester. He confirmed Kasper, his goalkeeper loyalist, on the 27th of June 2011.

Kasper Schmeichel Bio – Rise to Fame Story:

Kasper repaid his manager’s faith by keeping 17 clean sheets and saving four penalties across 52 games.

In the 2011–12 season, his standout performances earned him both the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.

Instead of pursuing a big-money move, Kasper chose to stay with Leicester and help boost their profile in English football.

During the 2013–14 season, his nine clean sheets and an unbeaten run of 19 games from December to April were key in securing Leicester’s promotion to the Premier League with six games to spare.

The pinnacle of Kasper’s career came on May 2, 2016, when he played a vital role in leading his team to the Premier League title at the age of 29.

Fun fact: Kasper was the same age and the title-winning day as his father when Peter won Manchester United’s first Premier League title in 1993.

In 2013-14, his guard stood strong, leading Leicester's premier song. But 2nd of May, destiny's play, mirrored his father's title day.

Creating a world record, the Schmeichels became the only biological father and son to win the Premier League, as well as being in the same position to do so.

At the time of writing, Kasper had just made his dad even prouder as he conceded no goal in his side’s 0-9 defeat to Southampton on the 25th day of October 2019.

Starting off, Kasper is someone who is resourceful, brave and passionate. He is a true leader who is very dedicated to what he does both on and off the pitch.

Kasper is able to adapt more easily to different human behaviours especially public scrutiny about comparing him to his dad. According to the Guardian,

“Seeking a life as a goalkeeper has not been the easiest mission. Even now, strangers come up with some wisecrack about how I will never be as good as the original which is my Dad. Being judged like this is something I have tried to live with as privately as possible.”

Being his own man, having his own qualities, his own direction, his own style, and his own ambitions is what Kasper wanted.

Despite being 32 (at the time of writing) and having two kids, people still see Kasper as someone’s son. However, he still believes there are many fans who admire his own spectacular accomplishments without making witty remarks or jokes.
