Bruno Lage Childhood Story:
For Biography starters, he bears the full name Bruno Miguel Silva do Nascimento. The Football manager was born on the 12th day of May 1976 to his Father, Fernando Lage Nascimento, and Mother, Celeste Nascimento, in Setubal, Portugal.
Bruno Large came to the world as the first child among two sons (himself and a brother, Luis). They were born from the blissful Catholic marital union between their Dad and Mum. Behold one of Bruno Lage’s parents – his look-alike Father, Fernando.
As a child, Bruno’s name didn’t have ‘Lage’ in it. And if you think that is his surname, then you’re wrong. This name, ‘Lage’, is a nickname that Bruno got when he was a child. Lage is a nickname people call his father (Fernando). He transferred that to his son, Bruno.
Growing-Up Years with Brother:
The Portuguese manager wasn’t the only child born to Fernando and Celeste, his parents. Bruno grew up alongside his one and only younger brother, who goes by the name Luís Nascimento. Both footballing brothers, pictured below, have come a long way in life.
Early Life:
Bruno and his brother, Luis, grew up in the Portuguese municipality of Setúbal. During his childhood and teenage years, Bruno faced challenges, including a struggle with gambling distractions—one of two significant issues he worked hard to overcome.
At the same time, Bruno developed a deep passion for football, often playing late into the night. He would frequently return home at odd hours, his clothes showing the evidence of his love for the game. It wasn’t uncommon for him to come home with torn pants and worn-out sneakers, reflecting the rough and tumble of his football adventures.
At a critical time in his childhood, he spent more time indoors. This was because of family reasons, as he cared for his injured mother. That period was the worst time of Bruno Lage’s childhood. Now, let’s give you the account of the ugly incident that led to Celeste’s injury.
The Story of Bruno Lage’s Mother?
A terrible accident at her workplace caused Celeste’s injury. Bruno Lage’s Mother worked at a hospital in Outão, Setúbal Municipality, Portugal.
According to his parent’s neighbours, a terrible accident in her workplace cut off one of her limbs. Put simply, Celeste lost one of her hands.
Bruno Lage, up to this day, never speaks about it. Watching his beloved mother lose one of her hands was the worst thing he faced as a child. Up to this day, Bruno Lage’s Mum is not with two hands. Thanks to medical advancements, she now wears a prosthetic implant.
In the course of developing the Biography of Football Managers, we notice that Ralf Rangnick also had some of the joys of his childhood cut short because of his sick mother. Her health deteriorated because of the psychological effect of experiencing World War II.
Bruno Lage Family Background:
The Portuguese manager hails from a football-loving household. The beautiful game started with Bruno Lage’s Father, who is a retired footballer. Fernando Lage Nascimento had an illustrious career that began in Setúbal. Behold Bruno Lage’s Dad in his Early football days.
After retirement from his football career, Lage’s Dad continued in the same line of trade. He went into football administration and coaching. Fernando Lage Nascimento rose to become the president of the Setúbal District Nucleus of the Football Coaches Association.
On the other hand, Bruno Lage’s Mother (Celeste Nascimento) is a cook. For years, she did work in the kitchen of an Outão hospital in Setúbal. This was where Bruno Lage’s Mum had the accident that made her lose a limb. That ugly event kept Celeste from work for a while.
According to the statements of those who know Celeste Nascimento, the accident did not prevent her from becoming an independent woman. Bruno Lage’s Mum, months after the accident, wanted her former self back. As strong as she was, Celeste returned to her job.
Even with the prosthesis in place, Bruno Lage’s Mum does everything. Celeste Nascimento could spread clothes, bake cakes and do other confectionary jobs. She is one of the best bakers in Setúbal, a hardworking woman who hates to be limited by her disability.

Bruno Lage Biography – Football Career Story:
Before becoming a manager, the Portuguese coach had a very short football career. Like many Brazilians, Bruno started out with futsal. For those who don’t know, this is a football-based game, a variation of mini-football played indoors on a small hard court.
Bruno Lage’s parents approved him and his brother (Luis) to begin with the sport. They (as pictured below) began playing with the futsal team, O Quintal. Luis, Bruno Lage’s brother, stands as the fourth person from the left. Bruno, who is taller, is obvious with the circle.
The quest for a Futsal career appeared not to have worked out as Bruno expected. That prompted a switch from Futsal to football.
In the year 1990, Bruno enrolled at Independente and then moved to the Portuguese club UCRD Praiense, where he completed his academy football.
Senior Football Career:
Truth be told, Bruno Lage’s playing career was nothing to write home about. At 19, he had graduated from UCRD Praiense Academy. It wasn’t easy for Lage to get into their first team.
It took him almost four years to begin playing senior football with UCRD. And Bruno Lage didn’t stay with them for long. In the year 2001, he left his long-term club, UCRD Praiense to join Quintajense.
At the time he joined this new club, little did Lage know his young playing career was coming to an end. The truth is, Bruno Lage’s football potential was steadily on a decline at the tender age of 26.
Like Brighton manager Graham Potter, Bruno realized that pursuing a football career wasn’t his calling.
There were no signs of a contract extension, and going into football management was seen as a worthwhile job. That year, 2002, Bruno called it a quit. The 26-year-old hung up his footballing boots.
Bruno Lage Bio – Early Years in Management:
Retirement from the beautiful game happened in the year 2002 – at the age of 26. Five years before that, Bruno had already seen the inevitable.
At the age of 21, the youngster began multitasking between playing football and his coaching apprentice programme.
Bruno Lage’s first coaching job was with Vitória Futebol Clube – which his Dad (Fernando Lage) advised him to start with.
This is a Portuguese club from Setúbal, where his parents lived. Fernando Lage, his Dad, was also a coach at that time. He helped his son lay a good foundation in his new career.
Between the years (2000 to 2004), Bruno switched coaching jobs five times.
In the course of those years, he worked with Maio, Fazendense, Comércio e Indústria, Estrela Vendas Novas and Sintrense. Back then, Lage travelled a lot and starved in his pursuit of success.
The Benfica Story:
Two years after ending his soccer career and focusing only on coaching, Lage finally found his dream job.
The 28-year-old, as observed below, was employed by Benfica Youth. Did you know?… Bruno Lage coached every youth team of Benfica from the year 2004 to 2012.
The UAE Destiny:
After nine years as a Benfica youth coach, Bruno felt it was time to move on. In the year 2012, he decided to broaden his horizons. Lage took a new coaching job at Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates. This job came with an improved salary and managerial position.
Comparing it to his old job at Benfica Youth, Bruno confessed that his UAE job gave him a more valuable experience under his coaching belt. While in Dubai, little did Bruno know that friendship with a fellow Portuguese would take his career in an unlikely new direction.
How Carlos Carvalhal changed Bruno Lage’s Life:
The former Sporting and Besiktas boss chose Dubai as his destination to take a break from the ever-busy life of football management. While in the UAE, Carlos Carvalhal met Large. Both shared a chemistry together and decided to turn their friendship into something good.
After having conversations about their coaching experience, Buno and Carlos decided to write a book.
They wrote a book together titled “Soccer: Developing a Know How”. The book was a product of their interaction, which they felt the need for the world to know about.
The Book – “Soccer: Developing a Know-How” is essentially a coaching manual. It explains everything about training methods and the key principles behind attacking and defensive strands.
After they co-wrote and published it, Bruno made a decision to follow his friend. He decided to leave his Dubai job and follow Carlos Carvalhal to the United Kingdom.
First Arrival in England:
When Carlos Carvalhal was offered the Sheffield Wednesday job in 2015, the manager took Bruno Lage with him. At Wednesday, he tasked Lage with overseeing units of both defence and midfield of his training sessions. Such dedication earned both a Premier League dream.
Following the sacking of Paul Clement, Swansea City appointed Carlos Carvalhal. As expected, he took Bruno Lage with him.
Managing a Premier League club is every coach’s dream, and Bruno Lage first managed to get there (the Premier League) as an assistant to Carvalho.
Swansea City had some big names at that time. These persons include the likes of Daniel James (Winger), Gylfi Sigurdsson (CM), Fernando Llorente (CF), Jordan Ayew (CF) and Renato Sanches (CM)
Did you know?… Bruno Lage gave assistance to his boss to beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on two occasions. A big (3-1) win against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal followed. That defeat was among the thing that made Wenger (in 2018) feel his time at Arsenal was over.
For turning around Swansea’s decline, Bruno Lage’s boss, Carlos Carvalhal, got his first Premier League Manager of the Month award for January 2018.
After managing Swansea, both Bruno and Carvalhal decided to return to Portugal, where they take up different coaching jobs.
The Return to Benfica:
Carvalhal was a huge influence on Lage’s early career, including his family. He prepared him for management and also passed on some knowledge to Bruno Lage’s younger brother, Luis Nascimento. This experience earned the future Wolves’ man a job with Benfica B.
Now, with a familiar setting (Benfica B), Bruno Lage began to work with the youngsters. Among those was Joao Felix, a footballer who took him as his Father.
Little did Bruno Lage know something was about to happen. That this boy (Felix) would uplift his coaching career forever.
The phone call that changed Bruno Lage’s Life:
The start of the year 2019 wasn’t good for Benfica. That January, the club had lost to a very small team, Portimonense.
That loss angered Benfica’s president, who decided to take matters into his hands. All he wanted was a way to punish the club’s manager, Rui Vitoria.
A phone call in the early days of January 2019 changed the life of Bruno Lage forever. On that day, the Benfica B coach was getting into his car to work. Suddenly, his mobile phone rang. Bruno Lage took a glance at the screen and saw a name he had never expected.
True Caller popped up Luis Filipe Vieira’s name. He is the Benfica president, the person whose name was on Bruno Lage’s phone screen.
The club president asked Lage if he wanted to become Benfica’s caretaker boss. Bruno Lage was first dumbfounded. Immediately, he replied to Benfica’s President saying;
Yes Sir!
Bruno Lage Biography – Success Story:
The Benfica B coach became the caretaker boss of the first team, replacing Rui Vitoria. Luis Filipe Vieira (Benfica President) made Rui pay the price for a 2-0 defeat to Portimonense. That big defeat left Benfica in fourth position, seven points below the league leaders.
Now as Benfica Boss, the first thing Bruno Lage did was change the team’s formation.
Then, he introduced a number of talented youngsters to his side. These names include João Félix (striker), Gedson Fernandes (central midfield), and Florentino Luis (defensive midfield).
Building his team around Felix:
Bruno Lage knew how special the teenager was, so he did everything possible to support his rising superstardom. Because of Joao Felix, the Benfica Boss changed his formation to a 4-4-1-1. The aim was to accommodate Felix as a second striker behind Haris Seferovic.
With this formation, Felix was given the freedom to roam and generally frighten the hell out of all opposition’s defences.
Within four months, Bruno Lage’s Benfica played 19 games, won 18 and scored 72 goals. This amazing feat led Benfica to a stunning title 2018/2019 success.
Journey to Wolverhampton Wanderers:
Did you know?… It was that Benfica league title and the stylish manner in which Bruno Lage achieved it that led him to the Molineux. Wolves sacked Nuno Espirito Santo after a disastrous 3-2 defeat by rivals West Bromwich Albion.
Upon the BBC announcement of Bruno Lage as the next Wolves’ boss, both staff and fans began googling his name. They notice Wolves had brought the man who spearheaded (statistically), the greatest second half of a season – in Portuguese League’s history.
While other names like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were heavily considered, the choice of Bruno Lage overpowered as it offers a much more natural fit to Wolves. The club had a dominant Portuguese dressing room made up of footballers from Jorge Mendes.
This Legendary football super-agent had been so influential in Wolves’ recruitment for years. Jorge Mendes is responsible for managing Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espírito Santo and Bruno Lage.
Also, mighty superstars like CR7, Ruben Dias, Fabinho and João Cancelo (RB), Ederson, etc.
Truth be told, without Jorge Mendes, there would be no 80% of Wolves players. Popular among them are; Rúben Neves (DM), Hélder Costa, Pedro Neto (RW), Adama Traoré (RW), Nélson Semedo (RB). Also, he manages Daniel Podence (RW), Francisco Trincão (RW), Rayan Aït-Nouri (LB) and José Sá, etc.
Helping Wolverhampton Wanderers to rise again:
Nuno did great work at Wolves, and Bruno Lage began a successful job to build upon that.
In his reign, England stars like Max Kilman and Conor Coady improved through their formidable defensive alliance. New stars like Hwang Hee-chan also aligned well with Raul Jimenez.
In the 21/22 season, Lage shocked everyone with his invincible streak. An inexperienced manager with just 18 months in top football management – pushed Wolves to Champions League places. And caused a football revolution alongside David Moyes via West Ham.
Bruno Lage is, without a doubt, an intelligent, football-obsessed tactician. His meteoric rise had proven that he is ready to take up even bigger roles. Like managing Portugal and any of the Premier League big six. The rest of Bruno Lage’s Biography, as we say, is history.
